BEAR Merit System
The BEAR Merit System is designed to reinforce positive student behavior and maintain high expectations for conduct, attendance, and classroom engagement. As educators, it is essential that we align our practice with the NYC Department of Education’s “Citywide Behavioral Expectations to Support Student Learning” while upholding the integrity of this system. Students who fail to meet behavioral and academic responsibilities will face appropriate consequences, including disqualification from school events such as trips, dances, and extracurricular activities.
ATTENDANCE
- Must achieve 90%
- Cannot be late more than 10 times to school
BEHAVIOR
- 3 classroom removals = 1 Principal’s Suspension.
- 3 Principal’s Suspensions = 1 Superintendent Suspension.
- Any Superintendent Suspension will result in immediate disqualification from all non-classroom activities (e.g., trips, teams, extracurriculars).
CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES
Punctuality to Class:
- 3 or more class latenesses will automatically prevent a student from receiving an E (Excellent) in Conduct for that marking period.
- All class latenesses must be documented in OORS (B3 Infraction). After 3 repeated infractions, a classroom removal will be issued.
Disruptions to the Educational Process:
- 3 or more disruptions disqualify a student from receiving an E or S (Satisfactory) in Conduct for the marking period.
- Each disruption must be reported as a B7 Infraction in OORS. After 3 repeated disruptions, a classroom removal will follow.
Inappropriate/Disrespectful Talk Toward Adults:
- 3 or more instances of inappropriate or disrespectful language toward staff will disqualify a student from receiving an E, S, or N (Needs Improvement) in Conduct.
- Each instance must be reported as a B8 Infraction in OORS.
- 3 repeated infractions will result in a classroom removal.
